We’ve partnered with an exciting start-up who are hiring a Lead AI Engineer to own the design, delivery, and performance of production AI systems inside a fast-growing SaaS company. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who sets technical direction, builds critical components themselves, and raises the standard across the team.

The Role
You’ll lead the architecture and execution of AI features embedded in a data-rich platform. You’ll partner closely with product and engineering, translate ambition into scalable systems, and ensure everything shipped is reliable, secure, and cost-efficient.

Key Responsibilities
• Own AI technical strategy and architecture
• Build and ship production-grade AI systems end to end
• Design reliable retrieval and multi-step AI workflows
• Establish strong AI-ready data models and contracts
• Implement evaluation frameworks and production monitoring
• Optimise for cost, latency, scalability, and reliability
• Enforce privacy and security-by-design standards
• Mentor engineers and drive technical excellence

What You Bring
• Strong backend engineering background with experience shipping production systems
• Proven technical leadership and ownership across teams
• Hands-on experience with LLM systems (RAG, tool calling, orchestration workflows, prompt management, model routing)
• Strong data systems capability (SQL, APIs, structured data modelling)
• Experience building reliable, observable, high-performance systems
• Clear communication and the ability to align stakeholders around technical decisions
